They say that less is more. In the case of reducing, this is certainly true. Reducing is the process of rapidly boiling a liquid so that it decreases in volume and becomes thicker and more flavorful. This is normally done in a saucepan and is often used to make sauces. If you have to reduce a liquid by half, it should be boiled until only half of the original volume remains.
